Canada has always punched above its weight. But perhaps nowhere more so than in music. From legendary names such as Leonard Cohen or Neil Young to classic rock's Rush and Loverboy and global superstars Drake and Justin Beiber, Canadian acts have continuously shaped what the world listens too (they simply often don't realize that it's Canadian).

July 1 is Canada's 150th anniversary and we're using this opportunity to a soft launch a new project called Canadian Sounds in China (CSC). As a company that has toured many talented Canadians acts in China, from koto-playing Jessica Stuart to DJ duo Eagle I Stallian and rocker Lyric Dubee to name just a few, we've wanted to find a means to promote the great music produced in Canada. CSC will be the vehicle to accomplish that goal.

For this soft-launch, we've curated playlists on QQMusic and Netease that we feel represents the diverse excellence that is Canadian music. It is by no means complete - just an introduction that will be expanding and evolving over time and complemented by an MV channel on video platforms QQVideo and Youku. Finally, we're kicking off with a feature asking over 20 creative Canadians a simple question: "What does it mean to be Canadian?"

As the project evolves, we will be featuring the latest and best from Canada, including exclusive music and video releases (both MTV-style and live) as well as interviews with movers-&-shakers that make Canada the superpower of the global music village.

“Cochise(他总是这么叫我),你想不想成为加拿大人?”

I was raised in Gatineau, outside of Canada's capital Ottawa, across the Outaouais River in the province of Québéc. When I was 9 years old, my dad picked me up at school and drove me to a park for a talk.

"Cochise [he always called me by my First Nation name], how would you like to become Canadian?"
The question utterly confused me. "What do you mean 'become Canadian'? I am Canadian."
"Of course you are not. You know that you were born in Nashville, in the US."
At this point, the shock of this revelation hit me and I started crying. "But I don't know nothing about America. All I know is Canada!"
Note: my parents had moved to Canada when I was 2 years old and you had to have lived in Canada 7 years in order to become a naturalized citizen... thus the talk from my dad.
As I kept crying, my dad put his hand on my little shoulder and said "But you can choose to become Canadian if you like. It is your decision. You will have to take an exam and go through the formalities, but you can become a Canadian if that's your choice."
I wiped the tears from my eyes, and (literally) screamed out "Yes! I want to become Canadian!"
A few months later, I participated in the naturalization ceremony with my father (who was French) and officially became Canadian.
My brother on the other hand was born in Ottawa, Canada and would always tease me that I wasn't a 'real Canadian.' But I would correct him each time "You were just born in Canada, that's why you're Canadian. I on the other hand chose to become Canadian."
When I started working on this project, I remembered this personal story of why I am Canadian. And I thought it important for those who are not Canadian to understand us better in order to better appreciate our musical culture. So I reached out to many Canadian friends with a simple question: What does it mean to be Canadian? Here are their answers....

What Does It Mean To Be A Canadian?

What it means to be Canadian to me, is to first and foremost is embracing people from all cultures, and try as best you can to understand and embrace diversity. As an immigrant to Canada embarking on a music career, many people have extended a hand and shepherded me through the industry with advice, mentorship and overall the desire to help me succeed. It is truly wonderful to look back at my 40 years in the industry to take this opportunity to proclaim my gratitude to Canadians and the Canadian music industry with my continuing success.

For me, it’s the right to democracy, our freedom of speech and religion and the right to live our lives as we want to.
It’s also our multiculturalism and open mindedness. Equality and the celebration of our diversity that is one of our great strenths.

We love enjoyment of the outdoors and Canada’s vast expanses and protecting our enviroment and take seriously our responsibility to the world we live in.

I’m proud of Canada’s “reputation around the world”. It matters to us that the world look at us in a positive light.
Canada has reputation for supporting culture and the arts and I’m proud that so many of our actors, comedians, authors, and musicians that are our ambassadors.

And finally Family values that binds us all together.

For me as a Canadian living aboard for the last 11 years, it means to be open-minded and tolerant. Living in China definitely has its’ moments but it’s a great experience overall. When I do go home to visit, I definitely appreciate what Canada has. Being Canadian also means to being friendly and helpful to others. As the leader of Limousine here in Shanghai the last 5 years, I'm always happy to assist musicians/bands find their way; especially those new to the scene and maybe feeling some culture shock. Lastly, it always humbling to know that Canada is highly respected by other nations around the world. When someone asks me where I am from and I tell them “Canada,” they always give me a “thumbs up”.

Canada is a lighthouse of hope, a safe moorage for a vast variety of vessels, and a passport, indicating good will and a guarded openness to cultures and opinions. If I were to write a best-option scenario for a homeland, Canada would be it. I am fortunate to be part of a functioning diversity, a strand in the twine that makes the incredible fibre that is Canada, and I like it that we are all reflected in, and integral to this fibre; it is us.

I immigrated to Canada as a young boy. I didn't understand why or really gave it much thought. In the past three years, I have been travelling a lot. One thing I notice is that Canada has a great reputation abroad. But more importantly, I have come to understand what being a Canadian is. There are the usual stereotypes of hockey loving, doughnut eating and apologising Canadians but there is much more to it than that. Being Canadian is being tolerant and inclusive of all peoples. Having the opportunity to have a world view of politics, not just what is fed to us through media. Understanding various points of view without having to have conflict. I often say that I never feel terribly Canadian in Canada. However, I never feel more Canadian then when I travel abroad. Why is this? It is because Canadians are so diverse. At home we are all unique and have a place we come from...of which we are proud. But what is universal for Canadians is their ability to transcend their borders and come together as one, and celebrate a place where we can unite many nations, unite many viewpoints, unite many stereotypes and still be one. I am a proud Canadian and I think it shows in my music. It is uniquely Canadian. I am Canadian.

What does it mean to be Canadian? To me, being Canadian means: to care. It means looking out for one's neighbour, friends, family, and even strangers. In the words of our National Anthem, it means looking out for each other and everyone "with glowing hearts".

Being a Canadian is a real privilege because Canada is known in peace, love, and helpful for every nation, as well as healthy... Canada also protects all the human rights and even the animal rights! Freedom and respect are essential in Canada because as we all know, it’s a multicultural country and people came to it from different backgrounds and nations. And even in a same nation, the truth is that people are different, and they should have freedom and respect and they should reciprocate this. So in other words, you feel proud of being Canadian and your relation with everyone is based on giving and getting in peace, love, stability, and healthy environment... Happy 150th Anniversary Canada!!! "

Imagine you have a sibling, a sibling who is 10 times your size. Canada has one, the U.S.A. Is it surprising that two of our greatest exports (aside from natural resources) are singers and comedians? Canadians have always had a clear sense of who they are in relation to the world around them. And also a darn good sense of what it takes to survive, not only those long nights in the winter cold, but also those long days spent close to that oversized sibling. Canadians are (for the most part) respectful, focused, reserved, loyal, caring and darn good singers! And funny too!

Being Canadian is to be civilized citizen. To be open and to be ready to accept good quality thing. And it also mean you are living a good country where the government really listen to you and you are live in a great community! And most important thing is you are Canadian no matter where are you from and what colour you are.

Being Canadian is about being open to possibility, and taking pride in being thoroughly cross-bred children of the new world. It's about embracing weird kinks of all cultures and celebrating all of it in a party with all kinds of world music and food. Always proud to be a Canadian citizen, a citizen truly of the world.

“As someone who has had the great privilege to have toured Canada from coast to coast, being Canadian for me is having the freedom to travel exclusively and enjoy the majestic marvel and diversity of our vast landscape and the beauty of the people who make up this great nation. It's the fabric that binds us. HAPPY 150 CANADA!!! “

“What does it mean to be Canadian? I asked myself that question. I’ll tell you what it means. It means “Freedom”. It means the freedom to be who you truly are, love who your heart desires, marry who sweeps you off your feet, to get an education, the freedom to work, the freedom to have access to a free medical system available to all. It also means the freedom to be a free thinker and have your own singular independent thoughts and the freedom to believe in what you believe. To be Canadian is to be a colorful culture who strives to push you to embrace your uniqueness. To be Canadian, is to be free."

To be an artist in Canada means to be an unfettered soul of creation, inspired by the common good of every man, woman and child in God's plan of diversity; all in a place of magnificent natural beauty. Canada is the birthplace of world-influencing, world-class art of all mediums.

Every Canadian has won the lottery in regards to being able to live in a country that values peace, freedom, comfort and security. Being a Canadian musician has given myself and countless other artists opportunities to become voyageur’s in our own rights to travel across this magnificent country from coast to coast, to explore its natural beauty and the amazing and diverse comminutes and cultures that’s exist all over and have it influence our music.

To be Canadian is to be grateful for the magical Indigenous lands we thrive upon. It is to be grateful for the government money poured into Canadian artists. It is to be grateful for access to health care, for diverse cultural beauty, and for queer marriage! To be Canadian is to know that wherever your travels may take you, you will always have a safe place to call your home.

It means that although we call ourselves Canadian, truly, we are all immigrants blessed with the opportunity to make our homes on Indigenous land. It means we have the privilege and ability to preserve our respective cultures, religions, languages, musics and cuisines, in one country for all of us to learn from and experience.

I think being Canadian means being tolerant of all cultures, to value inclusion and lead by example. It means freedom and equality. Lastly it means stronger beer and better whisky... shout out to Crown Royal!

For me, being Canadian is to be myself. It is being open, understanding and welcoming to all the different people that live on our vast land. There should be no judgements on individuals but only a sense of unity in living together with our differences and similarities. It means to appreciate the beautiful nature that surrounds us everyday and to care for the our land the way we would care for each other. I am proud of Canada for letting me be my own person which makes me proud to be a Canadian.

We believe that being a Canadian is to be unique, to be different. It’s being given the opportunity to live freely and express yourself, achieving your dreams when you have the will. We embrace and frankly have been influenced by cultural diversity in our everyday lives and more importantly, our music productions. As proud Canadians, we love to share our stories, our passion. When we travel, our openness to learn allows us to discover the beauty in all people. That is what being Canadian is all about.

I think if you asked ten different Canadians this question, you could get ten different answers. So, I’ll talk about what it means to me. Similar to most settlers to Canada, my family came around 100 years ago from the Ukraine, Poland and Wales in search of new opportunities. Canadians embrace multi-culturalism, and we help each other reach their potential. We don’t care what language you speak, or the colour of your skin. We believe diversity is our strength, and we love to learn from each other. Canadians are also deeply connected to our rivers, mountains, landscapes, and our rich aboriginal heritage. Being a Canadian means you love and respect people, regardless of who they are or where they come from. Being Canadian also means you love and want to take care of our planet. If you read this and agree, then you are also Canadian in your heart, even if it doesn’t say so on your passport. Are you Canadian too?

For me, Canada is about multiculturalism. Aside from the First Nations population, every single one of us in Canada is an immigrant. In Toronto, when I look around, I see people of every skin, hair and eye colour, and influences from every continent represented. I've travelled around the world, and I've never been to a more diverse city, and it makes me proud. The music and arts community and the people I associate myself with in Canada have broad and open-minded views of the world, and don't tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, religious discrimination or any prejudice whatsoever. This to me is what it means to be Canadian.

Being Canadian is about freedom - receiving and giving. It is embracing diverse cultures which means accepting all people from different nationalities, religions, and walks of life. Appreciating all people is what it means to be Canadian.
